1. When did you start illustrating (for clients
I started right out of University. One of my first illustration projects was for a national digital campaign for Flare Magazine. The campaign won a gold award. It was such an encouraging experience and I couldn't help but feel this was what I was meant to do.
2. Who are your biggest influences?
One of my early inspirations was the wonderful Illustration of Jason Brooks. His work still inspires me. Nowadays I find inspiration all around me. I never know what will grab my attention and that is what keeps things interesting.
3. What is your work process?
I start with research, collecting my thoughts and translating them into early concept sketches. Upon approval from a client, I will proceed with colour. The final work is done either digitally, in Adobe Illustrator or by hand, in watercolour or inks.
4. What would you name as the biggest strength
of your illustrations?
I feel the biggest strength of my illustrations is their ability to stay relevant over time.
5. Do you have any formal education in art?
I studied fashion marketing at Ryerson where I took several art and digital design courses but I am mostly self taught. I spent most of my childhood with a pencil and paper in hand.
6. Where do you see the future of illustration?
It's hard to know what the future holds for illustration. I think there will always be a place for illustration although the medium will evolve over time.
7. If you could offer one piece of advice to
someone considering a career in illustration, what would it be?
Do it because you love it and always embrace your own style.
8. Last words?
I'm proud to be able to do what I love. It's a privilege to work with so many different clients worldwide and create visual solutions for print and the web.
